4 takeouts from NaNoBloPoMo
It’s been a prolific month for me, writing-wise. And I have NaNoWriMo and NaNoBloPoMo to thank for it. I am glad I took part, because it made me realise how much I love – and missed – writing. Being able to write is a gift, and one I intend not to take for granted again. But I also learned a few things about me as a writer during this time.
Writing for myself works for me
I had the opportunity to write an article for a not-for-profit during November, and while I wrote a good article and made the deadline, I didn’t really enjoy writing it. I used to love freelance writing, but think I have outgrown it. I have realised that if I have to write to someone else’s specifications or agenda, then it’s not for me. Having said that, I do enjoy proofreading and editing, so very open to *that* sort of freelance work 😉
My writing is enjoyed by others
The comments and feedback I have received from many of my blog posts tell me that I have a unique voice, an interesting perspective and I am insightful. What I have written about has resonated with people. You, dear readers, have enjoyed reading my posts as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
I have books I want to publish
Today’s technology makes it so easy for writers to self-publish. It used to be called vanity publishing a few years ago, but now am every blogger and her cat is doing it. And why not? You can bypass those pesky publishers who arrogantly reject your work, and – if you are publishing eBooks – keep most of the profits for yourself . I have a pile of projects in my Dropbox screaming out for some attention, and I intend to give it to them! Amazon, you know you want them!
I will keep blogging
Blogging this month has been a productive and worthwhile process. It has helped me realise that I *am* a writer, I do have worthwhile and interesting things to say, I am published, and I do have readers. I have also learned that I won’t run out of things to write about. Inspiration is everywhere! And this blog – and my others – have enough content to turn into decent eBooks.
And that makes me super excited about my future as a writer.
