Exhibitionist

Quite a few friends and acquaintances are having – or planning – exhibitions of their work lately, and I admit that I am slightly green with envy because it is something that I would like to do. I am a newcomer to photography, but enjoy it immensely and believe I am good at it, so why not show my talents to the world? (That’s one of my pictures right there!)

I must say that I am very proud of my friends for putting their collective creative butts on the line and contributing to the Adelaide Arts community. I also find the fact that they are exhibiting very inspiring: if they can do it, I can to. I just have to get my act together! I nearly, but not quite, nominated myself for SALA this year, but missed the registration deadline… 🙁

One friend has detailed the process she went through to exhibit her photos on her blog. It’s an excellent primer for someone like me who is considering the hows, whens and whats of my own photographic exhibition. There was also a recent article in Australian Photography about exhibiting, which was also offered another perspective. All good stuff. 🙂

The hardest thing about exhibiting, I think, would be the preparation of the photos: printing, matting, framing, that sort of thing. And perhaps choosing which ones are worthy in the first place. Red Bubble and companies like Blurb makes it very easy for artists to sell their work, so that base is covered, although I would, of course, be devastated if no one bought anything. Creativity and art are often subjective and nuanced.

So. When I return from my overseas trip this year, I will be planning my exhibition. I already have a theme, so it’s a matter of finding a space, organising my photos, and managing the event and sales. Sounds like an over-simplified version of hard work, but don’t they say that success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration?
