Help Fight the Hotel Quarantine Fee!
Mandatory hotel quarantine was introduced by the Australian government in March 2020 as a public health measure in response to COVID-19. It was free for everyone returning from overseas or interstate until July 2020, at which time the government began charging $3000 per person.
Listen to my podcast if you’d like to know what this policy decision did to ordinary Australians who were just trying to get home.
It is my contention that this fee is unlawful and I wish to challenge the legality in court. There are thousands of us who feel the same way. This challenge will be done strategically and in stages.
Stage One: Document Review
This first stage is a document review and Peter Fam, an experienced human rights lawyer, will be reviewing all correspondence and documentation between the government and myself to ascertain whether “we” have a case.
If it looks like we do, then we will proceed to the next stage. If not, well, that’s it for the time being.
This request for donations is to cover my legal costs of $600 for the document review.
How to Donate
I have set up a GoFundMe and you can donate here. If you’d prefer a direct link, it’s here:
Thank you in advance for reading and donating. This is fight is a matter of principle and is not just for me, but for the 100,000+ Australians affected by the Australian government’s cruel decision. Our Facebook Group is here.
UPDATE: We raised $818 for legal costs. Thank you to everyone who donated. I’ll keep you posted.

hi Diane,
i am being pursued by the NSW Revenue for the sum of $3065 for Quarantine costs. i applied for an exemption before travelling to europe to look after my ill sister and her husband. i got a reply that due to the high volume of waiver exemption requests i will receive a response in due course, which never arrived.
is there a class action against the NSW government about his?
if yes i would like to join .
i look forward to your reply.
kind regards fritz jacobi
Hello Fritz — thank you for reaching out. There is no class action happening (that I am aware of), and I doubt that there will be in the near future, because as far as the media, government and politicians are concerned it’s all been brushed under the carpet. No one has admitted what a policy failure this whole thing was. The narrative of “they had enough time to come home so it’s fair that we shift the cost to them” still prevails. No lawyers have really expressed an interest in representing us (hence why I studying law). They are more interested in pursuing vaccine issues (because that’s where the money — damages for medical negligence — is). If you haven’t already, I would urge you to join my Facebook group, which is pretty much across anything that is happening in this area https://www.facebook.com/groups/challengethefee.
